Item A Biblical and Theological Analysis of Specific Tenets of Word of Faith Theology: Pastoral Implications for the Church of God(South African Theological Seminary) Morris, Russell Alexander; Lioy, Dan T.This research seeks to answer the question, “what are the major pastoral implications of word of faith theology within the ministry context of the Church of God”? To accomplish this task, a practical theological paradigm is utilised. First, a literature review investigates the current state of scholarship regarding word of faith theology. The literature review reveals several gaps in current scholarship. No substantial inquiry regarding word of faith theology and pastoral ministry in the Church of God (Cleveland, TN) was found, therefore, the need for this research finds validation. Second, a contextual analysis that examines the basic biblical and theological tenets of the Church of God (Cleveland, TN)is given. This analysis establishes the classical Pentecostal context within which the research is conducted. Third,a historical analysis is offered that explores the historical and contemporary framework of word of faith theology. This allows for the juxta positional assessment of Church of God teaching and word of faith theology. Fourth, the biblical and theological foundations needed to critique and assess specific tenets of word of faith theology are explored. Fifth, the major implications of word of faith theology for pastoral ministry within the Church of God are suggested. Here, practical recommendations are offered as correctives for the various cited implications. Finally, a summary of the research findings, recommendations for further study and the contribution of this research to the field of practical theology are offered.Item Towards a Ministry Model for Promoting a Christian Lifestyle at Harvest Hills Church in Burlington, North Carolina, USA(South African Theological Seminary Johannesburg, South Africa) Morris, Russell Alexander; Woodbridge, Noel B.; Woodbridge, Noel B.This study is an attempt to provide a ministry model for promoting a Christian lifestyle at Harvest Hills Church in Burlington, North Carolina, USA. In a literature review an attempt is made to analyse and evaluate the theological basis of Christian ethics, as the foundation of a Christian lifestyle. A biblical survey is then conducted to discover the biblical foundations for a Christian lifestyle. Special attention is given to a biblical exegesis of I Timothy 4:16, as a key verse relating to a Christian lifestyle. An attempt is made to conduct a situational analysis of the American church in the context of a post-modern society. Trends within American society and the American church are then examined and how these trends influence the beliefs and behaviour of American Christians. The study then utilises an empirical survey to identify hindrances to spiritual growth among parishioners at Harvest Hills Church. In particular, the survey identifies key areas relating to the Church of God Practical Commitments document perceived by the parishioners as lacking in practical application. Perceptions relating to the negative impact of certain secular worldviews on the Christian’s commitment to Christ and the church are also identified. Based on the research findings, the study proposes a ministry model (a new praxis) for promoting a Christian lifestyle and spiritual growth at Harvest Hills Church. The study concludes with a summary of the research findings and the contribution of those findings to the field of practical theology.
