Item A Contextual Missiological Study Of The Sheepfold Ministries In The Garissa And Tana River Districts Of Northeastern Kenya(South African Theological Seminary Johannesburg South Africa) Omondi, Francis; Malherbe, Johannes S.This research describes the mission work of The Sheepfold Ministries (TSM) in North eastern Kenya, revealing the extent to which nationals have participated in mission. The case study in this research provides the crucial link between mission theory and practice as espoused by TSM. It further describes the context in which this mission occurred, and how that has shaped and continues to influence mission thinking and practice today. The data collected during this study makes public the work by TSM, and therefore provides the initial documentation for public awareness and appreciation. In this way, the research gives voice to nationals and their mission work in bringing their unique perspective into the corpus of mission literature. The study further addresses the question about mission’s priority today, mission in a turbulent and tumultuous context, and exposes existent gaps that could improve how nationals take part in Christian mission. The study shows that TSM’s involvement was intentional, organized, springing from careful reflection and a response to faith in Christ and that the communities they serve receive their ministry. Thus, the work by TSM missionaries provides a contextual missiological understanding and praxis. This thesis delineates the missiological paradigm emergent from TSM and brings to light the peculiar stories of national missionaries and their work. It concludes by offering implications and making recommendations for mission, which should inspire more mission work by nationals to the unreached peoples.Item A Theological Evaluation of Views on Children and Childhood in the Ethiopian Full Gospel Believers’ Church, with Special Reference to the Gospel according to Luke(South African Theological Seminary Johannesburg) Abera, Abay; Malherbe, Johannes S.; Grobbelaar, JanThe aim of this study was to explore, describe, and evaluate the common views about children and childhood among adult members of the Ethiopian Full Gospel Believers’ Church. The study addressed the following research question: What is the theological value and validity of common views about children and childhood among adult members of the EFGBC? The research question was answered by using four tasks of a Practical Theology research process as identified by Osmer, namely the descriptive, interpretive, normative and pragmatic tasks. The descriptive task was attended to, with the goal of answering the question, What is going on concerning children in the Ethiopian society and in the EFGBC? The research was done through literature study and a qualitative empirical investigation, using focus groups as data gathering method. The literature study investigated the views about children present in the Ethiopian society and the EFGBC by focusing on some of the popular Ethiopian idioms and stories regarding children, reports concerning children available in the public domain, official documents of the EFGBC, and the government constitution. This analysis showed that children are not getting enough protection, care and due respect because of the presence of underlying negative views about children and childhood in the Ethiopian society and the EFGBC. These findings were further investigated through different focus groups of leaders and members of selected local churches of the EFGBC in Addis Ababa. An analysis of the focus group data revealed that although parents, the church and the community at large accept children as gifts from God and there are good intentions to nurture them, children are not treated as they should be. They are not accepted as part of the believing community and valued as equal members. Moreover, children are not taken into consideration when the local churches and the denomination plan their annual budget and programs for the coming year, such as training, teaching and conferences. The interpretive task was accomplished by addressing the question, Why is it going on? More specifically, it investigated the reasons for the predominantly negative views of children and childhood found in the preceding chapters. The reasons found, include traditional beliefs and practices, lack of knowledge and insufficient integration of theology and practice. Other contributing factors include famine, war and conflict, corruption and inappropriate reporting by some child-based organizations. Responding to the latter, it was pointed out that a balance is needed between positive and negative information about children and how they are treated in Ethiopian society. The general finding remains that much more should be done to elevate the status of children and their ministry in the EFGBC. The normative task of this study was done through exegesis and analysis, selected passages from the Gospel of Luke concerning children were explored. A key perspective revealed by the study was the example set by Jesus, by welcoming and respecting children, caring for and ministering to them. From this study, theological perspectives were deduced which can guide the EFGBC in their ministry. The pragmatic task was addressed by formulating strategies to enhance the views of adult members of the EFGBC about children, their life and ministry in the light of the theological perspectives based on the Gospel of Luke’s view about children. The possible strategies identified were creating awareness about children, establishing a welcoming atmosphere for children in all the ministries of the local church, and teaching members to welcome, love, give care and protect children by following the example set by Jesus in the Gospel of Luke. Developing national strategies for the EFGBC should also get attention.Item An Appraisal of the Position of Children in the Worship Services of an Urban Baptist Church, Pretoria, South Africa(South African Theological Seminary Johannesburg) Labuschagne, Elizabeth Maria 1972; Malherbe, Johannes S.At present, contemporary child theologians join the global move towards a growing concern for children, displaying an appreciation of and interest in exploring the relationship between children and theology, thereby advocating for children to be recognised as people participating in God's design, acting with both voice and agency. In keeping with this development, the thesis presents sound ways of exploring the relationship between children and theology by describing the exemplary practice of a local church that embraced a child-inclusive theological perspective on worship and implemented it practically. The study begins with a detailed investigation of a suitable research design and methodologies for appropriate engagement with children in theology. This lays a foundation for grounding the research in the lives of the child participants and describing the church’s worship practices while ensuring children’s active participation in and contribution to the research. An appraisal of children’s position recognises the value of the church’s ministry with children, describing it in terms of child agency and participation, considering the principles of a child-inclusive theological perspective on worship. The appraisal suggests that embracing a sound theological perspective on worship results in practices that position children as fellow actors in the story of God. Positioning the congregation being studied as a model in this regard, presented an opportunity for a missional application, where the study sought to create awareness in a prominent church leader while reflecting on possible applications of the research findings to his ministry.Item Art and Polarity—Towards a Theology of Art, with Special Reference to Ezekiel's Prophetic Sign-Acts(South African Theological Seminary Johannesburg) Grossmann, Magnus J.; Malherbe, Johannes S.This dissertation is dedicated to the research of art and its theological significance. A summary of theologically relevant, art-theoretical conceptions of the underlying phenomenon serves as a starting point and allows for a reconsideration of prophetic sign-acts as artistic performances. Both art in general as well as prophetic sign-acts, particularly those in the book of Ezekiel, reveal polarity as a common and arguably defining feature. Thus, four polarities, which are art-theoretically relevant and prominently featured in Ezekiel's prophetic sign-acts, are studied in detail. The resulting insight, that polarity is a necessary element within the emergence of art, is associated with the revelatory nature of the latter. Thus, it is concluded that art should be considered as a manifestation of divine revelation. Finally, this conclusion is supplemented by an overview of its practical consequences within different theological disciplines as well as contemporary art.Item Conspectus Special Edition 2018(South African Theological Seminary, 2018-12-01) Smith, Kevin G.; Manyika, Batanayi I.; Keener, Craig S.; Nel, Marius; Mzondi, Modisa; Banda, Collium; Kipimo, Jesse Fungwa; Falconer, Robert D.; Asumang, Annang; Pretorius, Mark; Atterbury, Vincent E.; Brodie, Robert; Domeris, William R.; Erdey, Zoltan L.; Jabini, Frank; Kunhiyop, Samuel W.; Lessing, Pelham; Lioy, Dan T.; Mahlangu, Elijah; Malherbe, Johannes S.; Maré, Leonard; Peppler, Christopher; Pretorius, Mark; Smith, Kevin G.; Song, Arthur; Woodbridge, Noel B.; Du Toit, Philip; Erdey, Zoltan L.Item Conspectus Special Edition 2023(South African Theological Seminary, 2023-09) Nyirenda, Misheck; Nkabala, Helen Nambalirwa; Manyika, Batanayi I.; Darko, Daniel K.; Sanon, Yacouba; Katho, Bungishabaku; Abebe, Sofanit T.; Okorie, Ferdinand Ikenna; Adams, Scott; Adeleye, Femi; Banda, Collium; Cloete, Anita; Coetsee, Albert; Connoway, Izaak J.
